1: Mariam Elqaddafi Elhaddad, MSc in Computer Science.

2: I studied English in the UK approximately eight months before I took my IELTS test. Prior to that, I confess that I do have some past experience, since I spent the first five years of my childhood in the city of Newcastle in the UK. I also made sure that I did not lose what I had learned after I returned back to Libya. As well as constantly trying to develop and improve my level of English over the years through self study.

3: To be honest, I don’t have a specific method, or methods of studying. But, I would say that I would constantly try to practice my English language skills on a daily bases, whether it was through reading English books that I liked, listening to the radio, or watching a TV programme. I also believe that having a good vocabulary is a key element.

4: The IELTS test does need a certain amount of preparation regardless of your English level. Therefore it is important to find ways that help you practice the techniques required to take the test. In my case I found the books and CD’s provided by the English school I attended to be very useful which were (New Headway) and (IELTS Master Class) both by the Oxford University Press. And eventually when I started taking the IELTS class at School, it helped me to familiarize myself with the test and get a sense as to what to expect. Timing is another key factor during the IELTS test, especially during the reading and the writing tasks, which was advice given to me by my father and I found it to be extremely valuable. Also I would make the effort to read any academic or scientific material that I found interesting, especially on the Internet.

5: I attended Alpha & Omega College for the teaching of English as a foreign language, which is located in the city of Cardiff. After six months I attended another School which was also in Cardiff called Languages Direct. The reasons for changing to a new school were that even though I had benefited a lot from my first school, but after six months most of my best teachers had left the school, which meant that the quality of teaching was affected.

6: Obviously you would need to have a good language foundation in order to gain a high score on an IELTS test. But equally important is the ability to master certain techniques and have a strategy that works. For example, during the listening test it is known that you are given a few seconds to go through and check your answers before moving on to the next section, I would always use these seconds to look ahead and familiarize myself with the upcoming questions instead, since it was unlikely that I would change any answers that I had previously put down. Also, as I mentioned before, speed was very important, especially during the reading and writing. Therefore I tried not to waste any time on answers I wasn’t sure of or did not know. And finally, do my best to stay focused, which can be difficult in a test environment, especially when it’s your first time.

7: from my personal experience I found that it is important to focus on the quality of the teaching staff when choosing an English language school, rather than the reputation of the school itself. Also I encourage them to not consider English as a barrier but rather a valuable opportunity to master a tool which will hopefully help open many doors for them in the future. For I believe that what helped me the most was approaching learning with a positive attitude.

Finally I would like to thank our Cultural Counsellor Dr. Saad A. M. Mhemed for giving me this opportunity. And all the working staff at the Libyan People's Bureau for cultural affairs for their constant efforts.

I also wish to thank my family for all their support and encouragement. And best wishes to all my fellow students with their academic studies. Ramadan Kareem.
