Access/Foundation Courses:

Access courses are designed to prepare people who did not have the opportunity to gain A level qualifications at school for entry to degree courses. Some are fairly general, while others prepare students in a specific subject area and these may be linked to a specific degree course at a particular university.

Certificate/Diploma Courses:
British universities/colleges offer a wide range of Certificate and Diploma courses  such as (HNDand HNC). 
 

Credit transfer:
There are a number of qualifications (such as HNC/HND, one or more years of a degree course at a recognized university, a UK Certificate in Education, three full credits of the Open University) which may allow you to be considered for entry to a later stage of the course.

Entry requirements for undergraduates:
General Certificate of Secondary Education or General Certificate of Education, Ordinary, Advanced Supplementary and Advanced levels, but other qualifications, including the BTEC and GNVQs, are accepted. 

Master of Research (MRes) Degree:
The Master of Research (MRes) degree is a one year full-time programme aims to provide a structured and progressive training in research techniques as a foundation for future doctoral study or for a research career in industry. Most programmes usually include advanced taught courses and research project.
 

Course of Study or Research:
A candidate for the MPhil or PhD degree may begin the course at any time during the year but it is usual to begin in September/October. The minimum length for the Mphil and PhD is two years full-time, or the equivalent in part-time study.
 

Examination:
For the Mphil in most subjects the candidate is required to submit a thesis and be examined orally. Methods of examination vary according to the subject and course. For most courses a report on an individual project or essay is compulsory. The examination will also usually include written papers and may be supplemented by a practical or oral examination and/or course work.

Application procedure:
Every application is considered on its own merits but you should normally have a first degree or equivalent, and may be required to attend an additional course or pass a qualifying examination before or during the course.
